Abstract

La producción agrícola en las Galápagos empezó a principios del siglo XX en las cuatro islas habitadas. Actualmente, se conoce muy poco acerca del número, abundancia y distribución de especies de insectos y plantas en el área agropecuaria. La información sobre la presencia de especies invasoras y sus impactos en la producción agrícola también es escasa. Para asegurar la sostenibilidad de la vida humana y la conservación de las especies de las Galápagos, es fundamental conocer esta biodiversidad terrestre y las interacciones con los sistemas socio-ecológicos. Con el propósito de llenar esta brecha de información, se levantó una línea base de insectos en 40 fincas de la Isla Santa Cruz. Para esto, se establecieron transectos en los que se realizaron barridos del follaje con redes entomológicas y colectas manuales de insectos en los cultivos de cada finca. Se colectaron e identificaron a diferentes niveles taxonómicos 16 533 individuos y de estos, 10 331 fueron identificados a nivel de especie. Se identificaron 135 especies de insectos, de estas el 18,7 % corresponde a insectos endémicos, el 13,3 % a nativos, y el 46,7 % a introducidos. Las especies: Bromeloecia wolverinei, Ceraeochrysa everes, Coproica bisphanta, Cosmosciara hartii, Dettopsomyia formosa, Pseudolycoriella cavatica, Psychoda alternata, Pullimosina heteroneura, Zagrammosoma lineaticeps son nuevos registros para Galápagos. Esta información constituye una herramienta útil a la hora de incorporar prácticas agrícolas sostenibles. Por esto, se recomienda reforzar el sistema de vigilancia entomológica y acompañamiento técnico en la zona agropecuaria de Santa Cruz.

Abstract

It is estimated that more than 500 species of insects have been introduced to the Galápagos Islands via human activities. One of these insect invaders is the yellow paper wasp, Polistes versicolor (Olivier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), a social wasp native to continental South America. In Galápagos, these wasps are voracious predators of insect larvae, compete with native species for insect prey or for floral resources and are a human nuisance. Wasp suppression methods currently in use are inefficient and attract non-target species, calling for the development of species-specific attractants that can be used in baits to lure and kill wasps. To evaluate the potential for using wasp semiochemicals in baits, we determined the biochemical composition of the head, thorax, Dufour’s and venom glands of P. versicolor foragers via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Male and female wasps were tested for behavioral responses to body segment extracts from both sexes. Female body extracts consistently elicited more behavioral responses in both male and female wasps than male extracts. Females reacted to female head, thorax and abdomen (the Dufour’s and venom glands are located in the abdomen) extracts, whereas males reacted significantly to female head and thorax extracts. One male body extract, the head, elicited two significant behaviors: female wasps groomed more often, and males touched the filter paper more often compared to the blank control. Head extracts consistently changed the behavior of female and male wasps and, together with female thorax extracts, have potential as species-specific lures for yellow paper wasps. Heads were mainly composed of hydrocarbon lipids and oleamide, a ligand for odorant-binding proteins. The thorax consisted of fatty aldehydes, long-chain alkanes and fatty amide lipids. Field trials of blends of these compounds in high wasp density areas of Galápagos are the next step to confirm if any of these compounds are attractive to P. versicolor.

Abstract

Objective To estimate health inequity and vulnerability among Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMD) in Latin America using the syndemic approach.Design This is a secondary analysis of a previously published large-scale study on the prevalence of RMD.Setting Studies carried out in five Latin American countries (Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela). Health inequity and vulnerability in RMD were identified through a syndemic approach using network and cluster analysis.Participants A total of 44 560 individuals were studied: 29.78% self-identified as Indigenous, 60.92% were female, the mean age was 43.25 years. Twenty clusters were identified in the Indigenous population and 17 in the non-Indigenous population.Results The variables associated with RMD among Indigenous populations were rurality, public health system, high joint biomechanical stress, greater pain, disability and alcoholism; and among non-Indigenous people they were being a woman, urban origin, older age, private health system, joint biomechanical stress, greater pain and disability. We identified different health inequities among patients with RMD (ie, lower educational attainment, more comorbidities), associated with factors such as Indigenous self-identification and rural residence.Conclusions A syndemic approach enables us to identify health inequities in RMD, as shown by higher prevalence of comorbidities, disability and socioeconomic factors like lower educational attainment. These inequities exist for the overall population of patients with RMD, although it is more evident in Indigenous groups with added layers of vulnerability.

Abstract

Abstract Background To determine the burden of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) on patients’ work productivity and health related quality of life (HRQoL), and examine the influence of several exposure variables; to analyze the progression of RA over 1 year and its impact on work productivity and HRQoL. Methods International multicenter prospective survey including patients in 18 centers in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico with diagnosis of RA and aged between 21-55 years. The following standard questionnaires were completed at baseline and throughout a 1-year follow-up: WPAI:RA, WALS, WLQ-25, EQ-5D-3 L and SF-36. Clinical and demographic variables were also collected through interview. Results The study enrolled 290 patients on baseline visit. Overall mean scores at baseline visit were: WPAI:RA (presenteeism) = 29.5% (SD = 28.8%); WPAI:RA (absenteeism) = 9.0% (SD = 23.2%); WPAI:RA (absenteeism and presenteeism) = 8.6% (SD = 22.6%); WALS = 9.0 (SD = 6.1); WLQ-25 = 7.0% (SD = 5.1%); SF-36 Physical Scale = 39.1 (SD = 10.3) and Mental Scale = 45.4 (SD = 11.3); EQ-5D-3 L VAS = 69.8 (SD = 20.4) and EQ-5D-3 L index = 0.67 (SD = 0.23). Higher educational levels were associated with better results in WLQ-25, while previous orthopedic surgeries reduced absenteeism results of WPAI:RA and work limitations in WLQ-25. Higher disease duration was associated with decreased HRQoL. Intensification of disease activity was associated with decreased work productivity and HRQoL, except in WLQ-25. In the longitudinal analysis, worsening in disease activity was associated with a decrease in both work productivity and HRQoL. Conclusions RA patients are dealing with workplace disabilities and limitations and loss in HRQoL, and multiple factors seems to be associated with this. Worsening of disease activity further decreased work productivity and HRQoL, stressing the importance of disease tight control.

Abstract

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Desde el 2007, en la Universidad Iberoamericana se implementa un Diplomado en Modelo Educativo en el que han participado más de 400 docentes. En este artículo se describe la experiencia de acompañamiento docente que ha permitido conocer la práctica educativa en las aulas para generar data sobre la que se tomen decisiones y se hagan planes de mejora. El trabajo en equipo ha sido fundamental, promoviendo en la Institución una cultura de auto-evaluación. Los resultados son positivos y revelan las necesidades, fortalezas y oportunidades.

Se estudió el efecto in vitro de la jalea real (JR) sobre los linfocitos de 10 donantes voluntarios del Banco de Sangre del Instituto de Hematología e Inmunología mediante la prueba de transformación linfoblástica con el empleo de timidina tritiada. Se cultivaron 100 mL de la muestra (2 ´ 106 linf/mL) en las siguientes condiciones experimentales: 100 mL de RPMI 1640 suplementado con suero fetal bovino al 20 %, diluciones dobles de la JR (tableta 100 mg) desde 1:2 hasta 1:4096 respectivamente. Abstract

Se estudiaron 6 enfermos con el posible diagnóstico de reacciones medicamentosas por hipersensibilidad retardada (HR) mediante la prueba de transformación linfoblástica con criterio de incorporación de timidina tritiada. Se demostró que en 2 pacientes existían reacciones de HR a la carbamazepina, en uno al ácido acetil salicílico, en uno a la cloroquina y el sulfaprim y el otro paciente al ácido acetil salicílico en tabletas y a la materia prima. Se comprobó que la introducción de este método para la evaluación de la reacción de HR tipo IV en el estudio de las reacciones adversas a medicamentos es de gran utilidad en nuestro medio. Se modificó la conducta terapéutica en cada enfermo de acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos, lo que favoreció el pronóstico, la estadía hospitalaria y la curación6 patients with the possible diagnosis of drugs reactions due to delayed hypersensitivity (DH) were studied by using the test of lymphoblastic transformation with criterion of incorporation of tritiated thymidine. It was proved that the introduction of this method for evaluating the reaction of type IV DH in the study of adverse reactions to drugs is very useful in our environment. Abstract

La escucha dicótica es un procedimiento que se realiza para estudiar la atención selectiva en el sistema auditivo. Se aplica en la psicología y la neurociencia. Este procedimiento aprovecha la información correspondiente con la lateralidad, el procesamiento y la atención del lenguaje del cerebro. Más enfocado al comportamiento para la lateralización hemisférica de la percepción de los sonidos del habla. Actualmente, el empleo de los medios digitales en todos los ámbitos de la vida se ve cada vez más reflejados dentro de cada una de las actividades del ser humano. La telesalud es uno de los campos que mayormente ha abarcado grandes espacios y que brinda un contacto inmediato con el personal de salud por medio de dispositivos móviles digitales para acceder a los servicios de atención médica a distancia y gestionar la atención de la salud. Las pruebas dicóticas hacen parte de este tipo de servicios que ha revolucionado la era digital. En este apartado se busca evaluar las posibles alteraciones existentes en las evaluaciones realizadas en las pruebas de escucha dicóticas desde una perspectiva de la telesalud.

Este estudio tuvo por objetivo esquematizar las relaciones entre las transformaciones tecnológicas y productivas en el ámbito laboral. Para cumplir con este fin, se siguió una metodología cualitativa de revisión documental y de aporte intuitivo sobre la base teórico descriptiva de conceptos como: tecnología, innovación, creación, cambios sociales, transformaciones productivas, y, principalmente, empleo en el marco del concepto trabajo. Al considerar el nivel descriptivo y exploratorio, se delinean las relaciones que se han encontrado en la literatura científica en esta área del conocimiento y se formulan la posible existencia de más relaciones. Finalmente, este escrito, expone la importancia del cambio tecnológico; mira el proceso de transformación tecnológica en el contexto social, plantea la emergencia o necesidad de un nuevo paradigma; fija la relación entre tecnología, innovación tecnológica, cambio social y trabajo para concluir sobre sus dimensiones, el tipo de relación y sus efectos; también pone de manifiesto las dificultades, límites y retos que representa este tema para el mundo contemporáneo, especialmente sobre el empleo desde una perspectiva jurídica ilustrada en problemáticas del contexto actual ecuatoriano.

Abstract

Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of a new variety of bio-based hydrogel films using a Cu(I)-catalyzed photo-click reaction. These films exhibited thermal-triggered swelling-deswelling and were constructed by crosslinking a triazide derivative of glycerol ethoxylate and dialkyne structures derived from isosorbide, a well-known plant-based platform molecule. The success of the click reaction was corroborated through infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the smooth surface of the obtained films was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal characterization was carried out in terms of thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), from which the decomposition onset and glass transition temperatures were determined, respectively. Additionally, mechanical properties of the samples were estimated by stress-strain experiments. Then, their swelling and deswelling properties were systematically examined in PBS buffer, revealing a thermoresponsive behavior that was successfully tested in the release of the anticancer drug doxorubicin. We also confirmed the non-cytotoxicity of these materials, which is a fundamental aspect for their potential use as drug carriers or tissue engineering matrices.

Abstract

The immune response during and after SARS-CoV-2 infection can be complex and heterogeneous, and it can be affected by the severity of the disease. It can also contribute to an unfavorable evolution and bring about short and long term effects. The aim of this study was to characterize the lymphocyte composition according to the severity of COVID-19, as well as its degree of relationship to the specific humoral response to SARS-CoV-2 in convalescents up to 106 days after the infection and in their exposed relatives.An applied research was carried out with a cross-section analytical design, from March 11 to June 11, 2020 in Cuba. The sample consisted of 251 convalescents from COVID-19 over 18 years of age and 88 exposed controls who did not become ill. The B and T cell subpopulations, including memory T cells, as well as the relationship with the humoral immune response against SARS-CoV-2, were identified by flow cytometry and enzyme immunoassay.Convalescent patients, who evolved with severe forms, showed a decrease in frequency and a greater proportion of individuals with values ​​lower than the minimum normal range of B cells, CD3 + CD4 + cells and the CD4 + / CD8 + ratio, as well as a higher frequency and a greater proportion of individuals with values ​​above the normal maximum range of CD3 + CD8 + and NK cells. Convalescent patients with severe forms of COVID-19 that exhibited IgG / RBD titers ≥ 1/200 had a lower frequency of TEMRA CD8 + cells (p = 0.0128) and TEMRA CD4 + (p = 0.0068). IgG / RBD titers were positively correlated with the relative frequency of CD4 + CM T memory cells (r = 0.4352, p = 0.0018).The identified alterations of B and T lymphocytes suggest that convalescent patients with the severe disease could be vulnerable to infectious, autoimmune or autotinflammatory processes; therefore, these individuals need medical follow-up after recovering from the acute disease. Furthermore, the role of T cells CD4 + CM in the production of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 is confirmed, and it is noted that the defect of memory T cells CD8 + TEMRA could contribute to the development of severe forms of COVID-19.

Abstract

The Galapagos archipelago is an ideal location for studying species differentiation on oceanic islands due to its isolation and geological youth. Spiders, as early colonisers, are good model organisms to understand these processes. The aim of this study is to update the list of spiders found in Galapagos and investigate the current distribution patterns of these species in relation to their probable origin. The updated checklist now comprises 159 species, with half of these species being endemic to Galapagos, 24% cosmopolitan in distribution, and 26% of the species originating from continental America. Although in most cases it was difficult to determine the mode of arrival of these species, at least 16 species are likely to have been introduced accidentally by humans. High elevation islands inhabited by humans harbour the highest number of species and also a higher percentage of cosmopolitan species. The geographical range of most species is small, with 76% of the species occurring on fewer than five islands. Given that many endemic species are restricted to one or a few islands, we recommend additional studies to evaluate their distribution and determine if there are species that should be classified as at risk from extinction.

Abstract

The introduced smooth-billed ani Crotophaga ani has become widespread across the Galápagos archipelago in the past half-century. It is known to predate upon a range of native and endemic species, and is a potential vector for the spread of invasive plants and parasites. Here we report previously undocumented examples of smooth-billed ani predation in Galápagos, including that of an endemic racer snake and a scorpion. We highlight the possibility of smooth-billed anis having a serious impact on the endemic Galápagos carpenter bee, a major pollinator, as well as native and endemic Lepidopterans and other invertebrates. In addition, we report smooth-billed ani predation of other introduced species and note the importance of further research on the wide-scale impacts of smooth-billed anis in Galápagos and their role within the archipelago’s ecological networks.

Abstract

Existen diferentes medidas cefalométricas para evaluar las dimensiones de las vías aéreas superiores a partir del uso de la radiografía lateral de cráneo. Se desconoce qué características o factores de las vías aéreas son identificables y posibles de estudiar a partir de las mediciones disponibles y cuáles son las mediciones más útiles para dicho fin. Objetivo: Identificar los factores de las mediciones de las vías aéreas superiores y determinar su asociación a las dimensiones craneofaciales. Material y métodos: Estudio transversal. Analizamos las radiografías laterales y realizamos un análisis factorial principal para las mediciones de las vías respiratorias superiores: N-S-Ba, Ba-S-PNS, AD1, AD2, PTV a adenoides (DPTV) y Airway% (A%). Resultados: Analizamos 151 registros, sin tratamiento de ortodoncia previo ni síndrome craneofacial. Identificamos dos factores principales: el factor 1 (F1) incluye AD1, AD2, DPTV y A%, y el factor 2 (F2) incluye N-S-Ba y Ba-S-ENP. Conclusiones: F1 se relacionó con las dimensiones lineales y F2 con las características estructurales.

Abstract

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counterintuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfvén waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, α = 2 as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed >600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: preflare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that α = 1.63 ± 0.03. This is below the critical threshold, suggesting that Alfvén waves are an important driver of coronal heating.

Abstract

A fin de caracterizar la atención a niños en situación de calle en Venezuela, luego de una revisión sistemática de la literatura y la elaboración de un estado del arte, se diseñó y aplicó un instrumento para obtener información acerca de las instituciones que trabajan en el área y se elaboró una base de datos computarizada. Los resultados revelan: a) inexistencia de políticas públicas de Estado, de carácter nacional, orientadas a garantizar una atención especializada y de alta calidad a la población afectada; b) iniciativas realizadas, en su mayoría, por instituciones del sector privado y una marcada tendencia del sector público a desarrollar más programas en materia preventiva que de atención; c) ausencia de estándares de calidad; d) ausencia de sistemas de seguimiento y evaluación.

Abstract

To determine the prevalence of antineutrophil cytoplasm autoantibodies (ANCA) and its antigenic specificities in sera of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) before and after treatment.Sixty-eight patients with culture-proven Tb were studied for the presence of ANCA, both by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and ELISA against proteinase-3 (PR3), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and bactericidal/permeability increasing protein (BPI). They were sought before treatment and in 52 of them also after therapy for the infection. High sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) was also measured at both times.ANCA by IIF were found in 3/68 (4.4%) sera prior to treatment, one C-ANCA and two P-ANCA, all recognizing BPI. After treatment, this increased to 15/52 (28.8%), 3 C-ANCA and 12 P-ANCA, the majority directed against BPI (11/15, 73%). BPI-ANCA were positive in 6/68 (8.8%) and 15/52 (28.8%) before and after Tb after treatment initiation (p=0.003). PR3-ANCA and MPO-ANCA were negative in all Tb sera. A positive ANCA test correlated with CRP as inflammatory marker (p=0.001).The prevalence of ANCA in culture positive Tb patients is modified by Tb chemotherapy. BPI is the main target antigen for ANCA in tuberculosis and BPI-ANCA increase after treatment.

Based on its forensic capacity and experience gained worldwide from the management of the dead in emergencies, including epidemics, the International Committee of the Red Cross has been asked by the authorities and other relevant stakeholders in some of its operational contexts to advise on the management of the dead from COVID-19 infection, for which it has prepared the following guidance. This includes advice on the handling of COVID-19 fatalities and a set of considerations for managers faced with the need to plan for adequately responding to a possible surge in fatalities caused by COVID-19.

Abstract

The effective search for the missing and identification of persons, alive or dead, are core components in the prevention and in resolving the issue of Missing Persons. Despite the growing literature on this topic, there is still a lack of publications describing the Search as a process that includes different phases inherently composed of forensic investigative and identification principles for both living and deceased missing persons. This paper is the result of discussions between the Forensic Unit of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and members of its external Forensic Advisory Board. It aims to present the Search process as an overarching concept that includes the investigation and identification phases of the missing in any state (dead or alive), in any scenario (with or without bodies), with an integrated, multidisciplinary, and multiagency approach for implementation by all actors involved in the investigation and identification phases of missing persons.

Abstract

El siguiente proyecto se denomina “Análisis contrastivo de las jergas peruanas de hace 10 años hasta la actualidad, 2019”. Este trabajo de corte descriptivo pretende hacer un análisis contrastivo de las jergas que aún se siguen utilizando en la actualidad con aquellas utilizadas en la década anterior. El objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación fue identificar aquellas jergas que aún siguen en vigencia, así como las que ya no están vigentes al momento de realizar este trabajo. De la misma manera, este trabajo de investigación ofrece un listado de términos equivalentes de aquellas jergas en desuso. La muestra estuvo conformada por 60 estudiantes de 1er año del Programa de Traducción e Interpretación. Para tal fin, se utilizó un listado de jergas que ha sido producto de más de una investigación anterior, se las categorizó según la intencionalidad de esta investigación, es decir se usó aquellas que colindan con las situaciones cotidianas de estudiantes universitarios (mundo académico y no académico). Posteriormente, se encuestaron a estudiantes universitarios sobre la vigencia de dichas jergas (aquellas que ya están en desuso y aquellas que siguen siendo utilizadas). Para las que ya están en desuso, se les pidió a los encuestados que coloquen un término equivalente. De esta manera pudimos verificar si la jerga ha sufrido alguna alteración en su uso contextual o no. Se espera que la información obtenida como producto de nuestra investigación sirva de base para futuras investigaciones futuras que conlleven a un mejor entendimiento del funcionamiento de las jergas y sus cambios con el paso de los años.

Abstract

Background: reactive protein (CRP), is one of the acute inflammatory markers which are called 'acute phase reactants' that are produced in the liver in response to inflammatory or infectious processes. The presence of ANCA formation has been described in patients with tuberculosis (TB). Objective: Determine the level of CRP, evaluate its behavior as a marker of the inflammatory response and analyze its correlation with ANCAs in patients with TB, before and after initiating treatment for tuberculosis. Patients: Patients suspected of having TB were selected. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, serum samples were obtained to analyze the clinical and lab data. ANCA determination was done with commercial inmunofluorescence kits and the C-reactive protein with ELISA, before and after the treatment for tuberculosis. Results: Fifty samples of sera from patients with TB were obtained. In the first (94%) and second (90%) collection of sera the level of Creactive protein registered was less than 5 mg/L. The average level of C-reactive protein was 3.05 ± 8.27 mg/L in the first sample and 4.49 ± 11.2 mg/L in the second sample (p = 0.46). ANCA positive patients had higher C-reactive protein levels in their second sample (p = 0.001). Discusion: There is an association between CRP values and the production of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies in a subgroup of patients with TB. Its significance is uncertain, but perhaps they play a role in some pathogenic function in response to pulmonary inflammation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
